Virgin trip – Tianjin, China part 2

Okok.. I admit I delayed on my updates on my trip to Tianjin. Was busy touching up photos.. Plus I have troubled accessing to WordPress or Facebook. I have to do it back home in Singapore, a week later.

So where do I start..
Tianjin is considered to be a small city with approx 13 million people. I daren’t say that there are no tourist spots as I have not done my research on that. =p The people are generally friendly but I problem with communicating in mandarin.  Although I think my mandarin is getting better, but sometime my brain just refused to acknowledge the language and wish english is the next option!

One thing that strike me was there were no burning joss sticks seen around the town. No sticking on the ground, no statue of ‘guan yin’ or any sign that the Tianjin people worshipped at. The town is really clean in that sense. My guide told me that the Chinese people here  ‘trust themselves than the god!’ Unless we go down south like Hong Kong. I find that statement hilarious though.. No offense! Indeed.. even in Singapore you will see local Chinese practicing Buddhism openly. I wonder why i see less…  in mainland china .
I managed to go to a nearby tourist place where you can buy souvenirs or even taste local food. These long street that surrounded by old architecture gave me the sense of real ‘chinese’ feeling. It is much better than to see modern tall building which you can find anywhere else in the world. I came across an uncle who made sweets as a carrier. Made from sugar and possibly honey, he twisted and turned it into a desire shape requested by his customer. It hardened after a few minutes. It was just too cute to be eaten – showed in the pictures below.

 Moving on…
It’s my 5th day in Tianjin.. and I never fail to learn something new. I did question a lot of things to myself why the locals did this and that. Curiosity just hit me again and again.
Let’s look at the  marvels. Tall sky scrapers are under construction. Buildings looked modern everywhere.. There are small alley that surprises you and you can’t help noticing 2 different income gap of people. I have to emphasize – HUGE gap. There are malls, for high-end shoppers. but the thing is.. There are almost no shoppers in the mall. It is relatively an empty mall. It does makes sense though.. the locals here do not shop for Prada or Gucci. Maybe there are not many middle-income locals around here. You are either high or low-income earner. Huge gap! You can feel it as u literally walking through huge buildings and dark alleys, side by side.

I tried to communicate in mandarin as much as I possibly can. Met a security guard while waiting for the new lift to take me down to the first floor. It was not fully operational yet so someone (A) was operating it from inside. The job of the security guard (B) at that point was to call for the guy (A) to open the door for anyone who wants to use the lift. I was there.. He was a new security guard.  Instead of helping me.. He stood beside me smiling and literally staring at me in the face because he did not see many new foreign faces a lot.. like myself. Curiosity must have struck him – I’m non-Chinese and can speak mandarin. I decided to use the stairs just in case he might stared at me the whole day. I couldn’t let myself get angry on that day…  He was just innocent. A villager trying to make it in the city.
 ……..
Today is my last day in Tianjin. We are greeted with smog. It is normal for northern China with desert around the corner and industrialization. Generally it is a different experience for me. Humble people I met. Friendly people do make up for what is lacking in the city. A ghost city literally! I will be back for few months time though.

It’s time to pack my bag and head down south tomorrow morning. Good night.

Virgin trip – Tianjin, China

Good morning world!

Its good to be back after Hari Raya break in Singapore. I’m now on board SQ 802 to Beijing. I should be reaching in 6 hrs (1441 hrs)

I was told that my journey will not stop in Beijing. We will catch a train across to Tianjin which will be our final destinationfor a week. I do not know what awaits at Tianjin or what sort of city it is. I will leave that thought for later as for now. The map below shows the 2 locations im going for this trip – Tianjin & Chendu! Yes they are quite a distant apart!

I just finished my breakfast on board. Will take a nap and update you once I landed @ the airport..

1450 hrs
So… The first thing I learnt in Beijing was.. B1 floor is ‘minus 1 floor’ hehe Reached safely at the airport now making wat to the train station.

Beautiful evening. Clear sky @ beijing.. unlike during last winter, SMOG.Even so.. I think I sat @ the wrong side in the taxi! Direct sun! grrrr

“Meter or flat pay” -An option you have to choose when u take a taxi in China.. wll not all parts of China you have that luxury! You just have to take note, if you choose a flat pay, they will ho the fastest route possible to destination. IF otherwise, the taxi driver will make a long way to destination. You decide! haha Now that is what I called negotiation…

Its time to switch on my mandarin language mode…

1730 hrs – reached the Railway Station. Got the tix.. and waiting foe the gate to open.

1805 hrs – Train departed. I’m all sweaty and tired. It looks like the train to Tianjin is c;ean. Air conditioned. But one thing I still can’t get over is what/how the locals do things they do. All i have to do is to relate FTs back home who annoyed the shit out of us. MY SEAT was taken by a random guy who did not have guilty concience when I walked pass my seat! Im too tired to do anything.. plus Ihave already seated for the last 6 hrs. I figure its a sign for me to just stand among my luggages. It’s just a 45 mins ride. -_-

I heard that secondary cities like Tianjin is not as beautiful as Beijing or Shanghai. An ‘Ugly City’ Not sure if I am able to get some good pictures though. But as some people say.. Ugly things can be beautiful too.

A trip to Vegas… part 1

I do not know how far back I should recalled and write about my experiences. It has been one exciting year of travelling for me so far. Places I have been so far include Toronto, New York, Boston, Callifornia, Miami, Shanghai, Beijing, Danang, Abu Dhabi, Dubai & Bali to name a few. I guess  would like to start by sharing you my journey from Tahoe, California to Las Vegas – That was the last roadtrip I had 2 weeks ago.

Dated 14 July – 15th July, I had exactly 1 day to explore Vegas before I headed back home to Singapore. You may wonder why so short. I was @ Miami for a week before I headed for New York for 11 days. I then went to Tahoe, California before decided to spent a day in Vegas – since I was nearby already. So yes.. back to the question of why I spent only a day in Vegas? Probably I was already tired and yearn to get back home. Plus it was already Ramadhan. It was a challenge.

I actually started @ Reno Tahoe airport. I had a luxury to tag along a friend of mine with his lovely wife as he drove us to Vegas.

This is the rough distance we drove through. Took us about 7 hours to reach Vegas. Try to spot Reno & Vegas on the map. You will roughly getthe bearing. Take note that  Im fasting also.. it was challenging knowing that the weather was dry and super hot. I also have to endure longer summer.

Nevada road trip

Las vegas was situated in a desert.  We crossed from higher altitude mountains in Tahoe to desert mountain range. it was quite a change of temperature. But I would say that  I am glad for that changed because I was not used to be staying @ higher altitude ground. There are chances that you might get dizzy spell and dry skin if you do not get used to it.

Give you the idea of what I went through during the journey. Being a Singaporean, these small things that I saw made me appreciate what my country cannot offer which was  valuable experiences. I am sure my friends and family back home are green with envy. That is why this blog is important to me. I hope you can be part of my experience when you read this blog.

Let me just fast forward the road trip abit. We past the infamous Death Valley. Ironically our ride decided to be almost out of GAS.. and luckly we made it at the gas station just in time before we got stranded!

We continued to pass a placed called ‘AREA 51’.  Also known as a place for alien/UFOs invasian. I was amazed to see Nude Girls signage – in the middle of no where. And orh.. in the desert! The locals must be desperate to attract customers huh. I manage to captured a landscape of ‘dead’ mountains in ‘Area 51’. I was told that no living things ever survived there. To add on to already hard to swallow fact, the whole entire desert had a record high temperature. The highest in entire United States! I was in a middle of it. -_-

We reached Vegas approximately 7pm in the evening. Its not sunset yet like in SG. The sunset in Vegas was pretty late, aroung 830pm. I was happy and excited to see Vegas, that was much talked about on TV! But it was not what I had pictured in my mind though. I was expecting a desert like the one in Sahara. Little that I knew that western desert is just different.  I will not go into that as that will get me off track. kinda. haha

Vegas
Lights, signaged, texts were so extravagant! Vegas reminded me of New York City. I was hoping my gut feeling about Vegas was right. I was excited.. screaming my heart out. Finally… IM IN VEGAS!!

Vegas
There will be part 2 of my vegas experience. So stay tune! Till den..  aza
